Itchy’s tailored leather silhouette is decorated with large reconfigurable wool necklaces. The face is surrounded with layered structure, drawing attention to its features while also offering a sense of comfort and protection from other peoples’ gaze. The layering of necklaces is evocative of bulky wool turtlenecks and their itchiness compels the user to grasp them and move them back and forth on the body.
One of the necklaces is attached to a power generator while a smaller one is augmented with a series of LEDs. As the individual pulls and pushes on the necklace, she charges the battery and the small necklace is activated, illuminating her face.
The pattern of lights that rotate around the neckline of the dress is reminiscent of safety buoys, lighthouses, and emergency sirens. The individual’s discomfort and nervous energy perversely directs attention to her face.
A geared servomotor is mounted on a leather-covered exoskeleton at the back of the neck, which is attached to a supporting plastic shell between the liner and the exterior of the dress. By pulling back and forth and rocking the flexible leather necklace, the motor is turned back and forth, generating energy and charging the battery. Another necklace, covered with a grey, translucent fabric contains amber LEDs. An exposed circuit board stores the generated power and controls the lighting pattern of the concealed light.
